RENT arrears could soon be waived for Muharraq Central Market fish sellers, who claim they are being pushed out of business by expatriate street vendors. The sellers have asked the Muharraq Municipal Council to intervene and stop them from being evicted by the Muharraq Municipality, which runs the market.
Council chairman Mohammed Hammada has backed the traders, saying the council should launch a fierce crackdown on expatriate street vendors.
'Those free-visa vendors will be severely punished if caught, as they will be taken to the Public Prosecution and their fish confiscated,' he said.
'They don't pay rents for using the market and are not authorised to sell, unlike the poor traders who are being forced to pay for various licences before being allowed to do business
